Why does AI recommend some websites and not others?

People used to find a local business by searching Google and scanning the results. More and more, they ask an AI instead, and they act on the one answer it gives back. Whether your business is in that answer depends on something most owners never think about: how your website is built. AI answer engines pull from sites they can read cleanly and quickly. A lean, modern site makes that easy. A heavy, bloated one makes it hard.

What AI answer engines actually read

When an AI tool decides what to recommend, it is reading your pages much the way a careful reader would, only faster and at scale. It rewards the same things good search always has. Clean, semantic HTML it can parse without tripping over clutter. Clear headings and answer-first content, so the point is easy to lift out. Structured data, the behind-the-scenes labels that tell a machine “this is a local business, these are its hours, this is the answer to that question.” And speed, because slow pages get read less thoroughly. The easier your site is to read, the more often it gets used.

Where a typical WordPress site gets in its own way

WordPress runs a large share of the web, and a well-built WordPress site can do fine. The trouble is how most of them are actually built. Drag-and-drop page builders produce deeply nested, tangled markup that buries your real content. Stacks of plugins pile on scripts that slow the page down. Structured data, when it exists, is bolted on by yet another plugin and is often incomplete or inconsistent. The result is a page that is heavier and noisier than it needs to be, which is exactly the kind of page these tools read least well. None of this means AI cannot read your site. It means your content is competing with one hand tied behind its back.

What a modern build does differently

The sites I build start from the opposite end. The page is mostly clean, semantic HTML, delivered fast from a global network, with the heavy machinery stripped out. The structured data is built in from day one, not bolted on, so a machine knows exactly what your business is and what each page answers. There is even a plain-text file that tells AI crawlers what your site is about. This is not a trick or a plugin you switch on. It is the natural result of building the site lean and on purpose, and it is what makes a modern site easy to read, easy to trust, and easy to recommend.

Do you have to leave WordPress?

Not necessarily, and I will never push you to rebuild for the sake of it. If your WordPress site is fast, cleanly built, and well structured, keep it. A care plan keeps it that way. But if it is slow, plugin-heavy, and getting passed over by the tools your customers now use to find businesses like yours, a modern rebuild is one of the highest-leverage moves you can make. It tends to pay for itself in plain search too, because the same things that make a site easy for AI to read make it easy for Google and for people.

The honest takeaway

You do not need to chase every trend to stay findable. You need a site that is built to be read: fast, clean, clearly structured, and honest about what you do. That is good practice no matter who or what is doing the reading, and it happens to be exactly what the new front door to your business rewards.

Questions, answered straight.

Can AI tools read WordPress sites at all?
Yes. The issue is not that they cannot read them. It is that bloated, plugin-heavy builds give them slow, messy pages to work with, so your content competes worse against a cleaner site. A lean, well-structured site is simply easier to read and cite.
Do I have to rebuild my site to show up in AI answers?
Not always. If your current site is fast and cleanly structured, the right content and schema can get you there. If it is slow and bloated, a modern rebuild is usually the higher-leverage fix, and it pays off in regular search too.
