What it costs
Money is one of the two reasons people put off calling a therapist. The other is not knowing what happens. Both of those are our problem to fix, so here are the numbers, in public, without a form in front of them.
Fee schedule
| Service | Fee |
|---|---|
| Initial 60-minute intake and assessment | $250 |
| 50-minute individual session | $185 |
| 75-minute couples session | $250 |
| Sliding-scale session (limited, by application) | $95 to $150 |
| Late cancellation, less than 24 hours notice | $95 |
Payment is due at the time of the session. We accept card and bank transfer.
Insurance, and why we are out of network
We are out of network with every insurance carrier. That is a choice and you are entitled to know the reasoning.
In network, the carrier decides how many sessions you get, what your diagnosis has to be for those sessions to be covered, and how much of your clinical record it sees. Out of network, those decisions stay between you and your clinician.
The cost of that choice is that you pay us directly. Many people can recover part of it, and we make that as easy as we can.
What a superbill is, in plain terms
A superbill is an itemized receipt with the codes your insurance company needs. You pay us, we give you the superbill, you submit it to your carrier, and if your plan has out-of-network benefits the carrier reimburses you directly.
We generate one automatically at the end of every month. You do not have to ask.
What to expect, honestly:
- Many plans reimburse somewhere between 40 and 70 percent of the session fee after you have met an out-of-network deductible.
- Some plans reimburse nothing. Plans with no out-of-network benefit exist and they are common.
- The only way to know is to call the number on the back of your card and ask two questions: do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits, and what is my out-of-network deductible.
We are not going to estimate your reimbursement for you. We would be guessing, and you would plan around the guess.
Sliding scale
We hold a limited number of reduced-fee spots between $95 and $150. They exist because the full fee puts therapy out of reach for people who need it, and a practice that pretends otherwise is not being straight with anyone.
How it works:
- Ask. There is a short application and it is not invasive. We do not ask for tax returns.
- Spots are limited and they are often full. We will tell you where you are rather than leaving you waiting.
- The rate is reviewed once a year, together, and it can go either direction.
- Asking for a reduced fee does not change how you are treated, the length of your sessions, or who you see.
Cancellations
Give us 24 hours and there is no charge. Less than that and the fee is $95, because the slot cannot be filled at short notice.
We will waive it for an emergency, an illness, or the kind of week where it simply was not possible. Tell us. We are not going to interrogate you about it.
If the number is the problem
Say so on the consultation call. Sliding-scale spots, a lower frequency, or a referral to a practice that takes your insurance are all real options, and we would rather you got care somewhere than not at all.
